Reading: Please ensure that you have read the following:

  1. The Advantage: Why Organisational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business
  2. Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High

Reflection: Think about a challenging conversation that you could/should have at work:

  1. What is the challenging conversation (who is it with and what is the issue)?
  2. What are the fears around having the conversation? What do you think could go wrong? Why?
  3. What are the consequences of doing nothing?
  4. What are the benefits of taking action?
  5. Where are your strengths in having crucial conversations?
  6. What is your learning edge? What would you like to improve?

Cover Up

This exercise deals with the importance of unlearning. The facilitator gives instructions to cover one of your ears or eyes. Later, the facilitator refers to the left ear as nose and the right eye as mouth. Subsequent instructions slow down your performance.

Fist to five

Fist to Five is quality voting. It has the elements of consensus built in and can prepare groups to transition into consensus if they wish. Most people are accustomed to the simplicity of “yes” and “no” voting rather than the complex and more community-oriented consensus method of decision making. Fist to Five introduces the element of the quality of the “yes.” A fist is a “no” and any number of fingers is a “yes,” with an indication of how good a “yes” it is. This moves a group away from quantity voting to quality voting, which is considerably more informative. Fist to Five can also be used during consensus decision making as a way to check the “sense of the group,” or to check the quality of the consensus.

Circuit and Processors (information and routines)

Would the team be a computer, it would need circuits (meaning information) and processors (meaning routines) to operate their activities.

This sequence allows the team to set up or revisit their information flow and team routines.

Information is power. If you want to empower your team, you need to give them the possibility to get the right information at the right time to operate their activities, but also to develop and grow as a team.

Gamestorming methods

Give and Take Matrix

The goal of this game is to map out the motivations and interactions among actors in a system. The actors, in this case, may be as small-scale as individuals who need to work together to accomplish a task, or as large-scale as organizations brought together for a long-term purpose. A give-and-take matrix is a useful diagnostic tool, and helps players explore how value flows through the group.
