Generating strategies and actions to overcome blocks towards achieving a practical vision. Start by looking at what stands in the way between the present situation and a future vision.
To identify strategies to remove the blocks
This process builds on a practical vision of the future.
1. Identify current reality:
Ask "What is in our way, what will stop us from achieving our vision?" Identify current barriers and blocks that stop the vision from becoming reality.
Facilitator will need to probe to identify the real blocks and root causes. Objectivity is critical, and ability to keep asking why this is still going on.
2. Choose the future:
Step 1 - Brainstorm actions that will remove the blocks
Step 2 - Develop strategies and detailed actions that are doable and the team can do
Step 3 - Prioritize actions and develop a timeline for detailed actions
Step 4 - Assign actions to team members
Follow-Up: Once the strategies are done then there is the issue of implementing them.

History of Development: LENS was initially developed during the Institute of Cultural Affairs research assembly in 1971. It was developed as a program called NINS which was for families. It then was developed as LENS. The same basic model was used in about 5,000 communities in a program called town meetings. It was also used in community development projects in about 30 communities in a 5 day version and 450 communities in a shorter version.
