AI Fact Checking

Goal

This activity aims to engage learners in exploring and interacting with ChatGPT, an AI language model. Learners will input diverse questions into ChatGPT and will then, through web searches and with their own existing knowledge of the topic, verify the accuracy of the AI responses, fostering critical thinking and digital literacy skills.

Materials

    Instructions

    1. Introduction

      1. Briefly explain what AI is and introduce ChatGPT. Ask learners if anyone has used ChatGPT and if so, how. What have they learned or observed in that use?

        1. AI, like ChatGPT, is a smart computer system that can generate language.

        2. ChatGPT learned from a lot of internet text to be able to give responses that make sense in a conversation.

        3. It doesn't really "understand" things the way people do; it follows patterns it learned during training.

      2. Discuss the importance of critical thinking when interacting with AI.

        1. AI can help to make certain types of work quicker and easier.

        2. It is helpful for generating a draft that you can then work from or to get the ball rolling on certain types of work.

        3. Even though AI is smart, it might not always give the right answers, especially in tricky or complex situations.

        4. It's a good idea to question what AI says and make sure it's correct, especially when dealing with important topics.

        5. AI reflects the information it learned, and sometimes that information might not be completely fair or unbiased.

        6. Checking the information with other reliable sources helps make sure it's accurate. ChatGPT doesn’t provide sources unless you ask for them.

    2. Question Prompt Generation

      1. Provide learners with the list of question prompts from Appendix A.

      2. Inform learners that they’ll each choose one question prompt or create their own complex question.

        1. If learners are choosing their own prompt, encourage them to pick a question about a topic they know a lot about.

        2. Emphasize that the questions could cover a range of topics, including historical facts and questions about the region in which learners live; best practices in business/related to the enterprise or endeavor they are pursuing; questions about a favourite hobby or pastime, etc…

        3. Remind learners that the questions should be open ended (can’t be answered with a yes/no answer).

    3. Demonstrate the activity

      1. Choose one of the question prompts as a group and demonstrate inputting the question into ChatGPT.

      2. Have a discussion with the learners about what ChatGPT produces - how accurate is the response? Is it specific or generic? Can it be validated or confirmed in some way?

    4. ChatGPT Interaction

      1. Instruct participants to input their chosen question into ChatGPT.

      2. Encourage them to critically evaluate the responses and take note of any inaccuracies, outdated information, or areas where the AI may struggle to correctly answer the question.

    5. Verification

      1. Ask participants to verify the accuracy of the ChatGPT responses by consulting reliable sources, such as books, articles, or websites, their own knowledge of the subject matter, or that of their peers.

      2. Discuss the importance of fact-checking and cross-referencing information.

    6. Group Discussion

      1. Facilitate a group discussion where participants share their experiences, challenges, and insights.

      2. Discuss the limitations and capabilities of AI, as well as the importance of critical thinking in the digital age.

    Background

    Preparation

    • Familiarize yourself with ChatGPT and its capabilities.

    • Prepare a list of question prompts for participants (see Appendix A).

    • Ensure access to reliable sources for fact-checking.

    Technology Considerations

Ensure participants have access to devices with internet connectivity. If conducting the activity virtually, clarify the platform or tool for communication.

    Additional Context

Emphasize the importance of respectful and culturally sensitive questions, especially when addressing topics related to Indigenous, Inuit, and First Nations People.

    Tips for Localization

Encourage participants to include questions relevant to their local context, fostering inclusivity and relevance.

    Debrief Questions

    • How did the accuracy of ChatGPT's responses compare to your expectations?

    • What did you learn about fact-checking and critical thinking in the context of AI interactions?

    • What steps would you take in the future to ensure the accuracy of information obtained from AI models like ChatGPT?
