Show My Fashion
Goal
The Show My Fashion activity aims to promote cross-cultural understanding and creativity by engaging learners in a Cultural Fashion Show. In small groups, learners will describe traditional clothing from their respective cultures to a peer, and their peers will attempt to recreate these garments based solely on the descriptions. This activity encourages cultural exchange, creativity, and reflection on the importance of cultural attire.
Materials
Instructions
Introduction
Explain the purpose of the activity: to explore and appreciate traditional clothing from diverse cultures through a creative and interactive fashion show.
Emphasize the importance of clear communication and active listening during the activity.
Group Formation
Divide learners into small groups of 2-3 individuals, ensuring diversity in cultural backgrounds within each group wherever possible.
Clothing Descriptions
Instruct each participant to describe a piece of traditional clothing from their culture to their group members.
Learners should provide detailed descriptions, including colors, patterns, materials, and any cultural significance.
Recreation Phase
Without showing any pictures or references, learners listen to the descriptions and attempt to recreate the described clothing.
Allow learners to choose their preferred method of recreation, such as hand drawing, crafting, or using an online sketchpad, but emphasize that they cannot use a search function or trying to find an image of the garment in any way.
Fashion Show
Each group presents their recreated clothing to the entire workshop, explaining the elements they included and any challenges they faced.
Encourage learners to discuss the similarities and differences between the descriptions and the recreated clothing.
Background
Preparation
Familiarize yourself with traditional clothing from various cultures to provide examples during the introduction. Model the activity when possible with a partner.
Ensure learners have access to drawing materials, crafting supplies, or online tools for the recreation phase.
Technology Considerations
If conducting the activity online, ensure learners have access to virtual collaboration tools or platforms for the recreation phase. This could be something as simple as drawing in the Notes app on their phone.
Additional Context
Show My Fashion celebrates the diversity of cultural attire and encourages learners to appreciate the artistry and significance behind traditional clothing.
Tips for Localization
Encourage learners to share not only the visual aspects but also the cultural and historical significance of the clothing they describe.
Encourage learners to describe a specific garment, not just the garment in general. For example, rather than a learner describing a ribbon dress in general, they should think of a specific ribbon dress (one they had as a child, one they have now, one worn by someone who matters to them, etc…) and describe that dress in detail.
Emphasize the importance of respecting and valuing diverse cultural expressions.
