by for .
3 + Low

For in-person groups who don't already know each other

Goal

Gently energise an in-person group who don't already know each other, and enable them to learn each others' names and really look at the group as a whole.  Establish a practice of friendly eye contact and smiling. Play with introductions and bake pronouns into the session.

Materials

    Instructions

SET UP - The Facilitator asks everyone in the group to write the name they want to use in the session, on a name card.

SET UP - The Facilitator invites the group to position themselves so everyone can achieve eye contact** and read each others' name cards comfortably^.

INSTRUCTIONS - The Facilitator invites the group to join the energise as follows:  Individually each one of us will be asked to state our name and our pro-nouns, when called upon. You'll know when you are called upon, to do this, because someone will BOUNCE this call to you using a smiley face and eye contact. After a BOUNCE please turn around yoru name card

DEMO - The Facilitator demos this first and states: ''hi my name is [x] and my pronouns are [x/x]. Then, relying on the name cards, the Facilitator makes deliberate, obvious and friendly eye contact with someone else in the group (but does not say that person's name) to BOUNCE the call to that person to go next (''hi my name is...) ALSO the Facilitator demo's that it's key to turn their name card to face themselves to indicate they've taken their turn already.

The recipient of the BOUNCE goes ahead and states their name and pronouns and BOUNCES onto anyone else by relying on the visible name cards AND turns around their name card to indicate they've taken their turn also.

Continue until everyone's name card is no longer visible and everyone has introduced themselves.

    END

REPEAT OPTION - reset with the new instruction, ''BOUNCE to someone you didn't bounce to last time''.

**INCLUSIVE VARIATIONS (if participants' eyesight is limited) invite them to BOUNCE to their immediate neighbour in the circle. E.G., ''hi my name is [x] and my pronouns are [x/x] and I am Looking and BOUNCING to my neighbour on my left/right''

INCLUSIVE VARIATIONS (Seated or Standing) If people are sat down they can put their name card in front of them, and if stood up, hold their name card comfortably, around shoulder height.

^FOR VERY LARGE GROUPS, organise everyone into separate, smaller circles of a size where unamplified voices can be heard from one side of the circle to the other, at normal speaking volume.

    Background

I wanted to bring the practice of using and sharing eye contact back. Especially back into in-person group sessions, in a relaxed and friendly way. I also wanted to combine it with participants taking the opportunity to introduce themselves with their choice of name for the session.
