When should this session be delivered?

In many school settings, a lesson lasts about an hour: it’s not that much time, and you may think it should all be dedicated to transmitting content. Yet, research into how learning happens has proven over and over that hearing information is only a small part of the process. Interacting with new content and ideas is fundamental to ensure learners find topics relevant and retain information in time.

This example lesson plan takes established practices from facilitated workshops and adapts them to classroom settings. Introduce moments of individual reflection and teamwork to encourage active participation, lively discussions, and a positive learning environment for your learners.

Drag-and-drop sections of this plan and add your own content to customize it based on the specifics of your situation!

    Who can facilitate it?

Facilitation has a lot in common with active education approaches and will be intuitive to apply for educators familiar with similar frameworks. In general, it’s a good idea to introduce participatory tools gradually, especially if they are very different from how the school system works in your specific context. For more tips on teachers as facilitators, you can find a full guide here.

All you need to introduce facilitation in your classroom are qualities you probably already cultivate as a teacher: trust, curiosity, a bit of playfulness, and a willingness to listen to your students and let them take ownership of the process. Does that sound exciting?
