"ice melter" to connect participants in small groups around something unusual they have in common (created by Jan Keck, of Ask Deep Questions)

Instructions

❤️ INTENTION

In this activity, participants have to find 10 unusual things they have in common as fast as possible to help them make instant connections.

📋 INSTRUCTIONS

1.Split people up into groups of 2 via Zoom Breakout Rooms

2. Explain that they have to find 10 things in common, but things like "we both breathe air" or "we both have two arms" don't count. Extra point for finding the most weird, unusual thing you have in common.

🧙‍♂️ FACILITATOR TIPS

✔️ Remind participants that the goal is to find "unusual" things in common, not just anything. So "we both breathe air" doesn’t really count.

♻️ VARIATIONS

3 Rounds
  1. For round one, challenge your team members to find the most unique thing they have in common.
  2. For round two, challenge your team members to find the most unique thing, while excluding physical traits and places.
  3. For round three, challenge your team members to find the most unique thing in a specific category, like high school.

Bonus Drawing
Send each pair back to a breakout room and create a drawing of the things they have in common on the whiteboard, then share the drawings in the main group.

Rename with Emojis
Ask participants when they come back to rename themselves with an emoji that best represents the thing they have in common.
