Goal

The Goal Setting Gifts activity encourages learners to brainstorm positive qualities that can support effective goal setting and success. Participants reflect on their own attributes and strengths, identifying the goal setting gifts they possess and can leverage to achieve their aspirations. Through this activity, participants are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones and explore their strengths and positive qualities in order to build self confidence.

Materials

    Instructions

    1. Introduce the Activity:

    • Explain the purpose of the Goal Setting Gifts activity, which is to recognize and appreciate the positive qualities that contribute to successful goal setting.

    • Emphasize that this activity is a self-reflective exercise. It will help the learner to identify the unique strengths and qualities that participants possess.

    1. Explain the Concept of Goal Setting Gifts:

    • Describe the idea of goal setting gifts as positive qualities that support effective goal setting and achievement.

    • Give examples such as determination, resilience, creativity, adaptability, discipline, and optimism.

    1. Brainstorm Lists of Goal Setting Gifts:

    • Instruct participants to individually brainstorm and list attributes they think are important for being successful at goal setting. Encourage them to think about their strengths, skills, unique personal qualities, and the gifts they’ve observed in others (including others in their group, or their families and friends)

    • Allocate a specific time limit (e.g., 5-10 minutes) for this brainstorming session.

    • Participants can write their lists on paper or use a digital platform if conducting the activity virtually.

    1. Share and Discuss Goal Setting Gifts

    • Form small groups or pairs, depending on the group size.

    • Instruct participants to share and discuss their lists of goal setting gifts with their group members or partners.

    • Encourage active listening and provide an opportunity for participants to learn from each other's perspectives.

    • Let participants know that if they hear their partner share a new gift that resonates with them, they are free to add it to their list.

    1. Self-Reflection and Identification

    • Ask participants to reflect on their own goal setting gifts and identify the top three qualities they believe will contribute most to their goal achievement.

    • Participants can write these top three qualities on a separate piece of paper or note them down digitally.

    1. Group Sharing and Insights

    • Facilitate a group discussion where participants can share the top three goal setting gifts they identified and explain why they chose them.

    • Encourage participants to discuss the insights gained from this activity and any new perspectives or ideas they may have discovered.

    • Invite participants to also share the gifts they’ve noted and observed in one another.

    1. Goal Setting Application

    • Facilitate a discussion on how participants can utilize their identified goal setting gifts to set and achieve their own personal or professional goals.

    • Encourage participants to think about how these gifts can be leveraged to overcome challenges, stay motivated, and make progress towards their aspirations.

    Background

    Preparation

    • Familiarize yourself with the concept of goal setting gifts and prepare examples to share with participants.

    • Prepare discussion prompts or questions to facilitate group sharing and insights.

    • If conducting the activity virtually, ensure participants have access to a digital platform for note-taking and group discussions.

    Technology Considerations

    • In-person: Ensure that paper and writing tools are readily available for participants to create their lists and personal action plans.

    • Virtual: Identify and familiarize yourself with a digital platform or note-taking app that participants can use to brainstorm, share, and discuss their goal setting gifts. Provide clear instructions on how to use the platform effectively. If using a digital whiteboard, see if a private mode is available in order to allow learners to brainstorm privately before sharing their thoughts with the group.

    Additional Context

    • Create a safe and supportive environment where participants feel comfortable sharing their personal qualities and insights. Building group rapport is incredibly important before conducting this activity in order for participants to feel comfortable being vulnerable and sharing these parts of themselves with others.

      • Ensure the group is at a place where they are comfortable enough with one another to participate in this kind of activity. This is not an activity that should be completed at the very beginning of the group forming process.

    • Remind participants that goal setting gifts are unique to each individual, and there are no right or wrong answers.

    • Encourage participants to embrace their own strengths and celebrate the diverse range of goal setting gifts within the group.

    Tips for Localization

    • Encourage participants to consider cultural or regional values that may influence goal setting and success.

    • Adapt the concept of goal setting gifts to align with cultural beliefs or local practices related to goal achievement.

    • Provide examples of goal setting gifts that resonate with the participants' cultural context.

    Debrief Questions

    • What did you learn by figuring out your strengths in setting goals?

    • How could you use your strengths in goal setting to help achieve your present or future goals?
