SLIDES XX: COACHING PRACTICE (GROW MODEL)
GROW model - Introduction/Brief background;
The G.R.O.W. coaching model is a well-known and easy to use coaching model. Developed by John Whitmore in the 1970's, it has been used extensively around the world.
Whitmore defined coaching, then, as "unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them."
It provides a simple yet powerful framework for navigating a route through a coaching session, as well as providing a means of finding your way when lost.
ACTIVITY
Plenary coaching (two participants for demonstration)
Two participants identify a real business issue of their own. Facilitators then coach each participant in turn working through the GROW model.
SLIDE XX: BREAKOUT ROOMS
Identify real business issue (of their own); practice (GROW) in pairs; feedback in pairs; facilitators ‘side-coach’ in the moment (raise tension and performance expectation of group).
Commence practice (in triads)
Focus on ‘upward laddering’ for Goal
Focus on ‘exploring/drilling’ for Reality
Focus on ‘going lateral’ for Options
Focus on SMART Goals/commitments in Wrap - getting ‘10/10 confidence rating’ for Wrap Up
Debrief, including solution focused language – not dwelling on the downside of issues.
Reframing negative statements using open questions that focus on possibilities/solutions. Negative language can be self-fulfilling, negative people blame outside forces – other people, and circumstances – for their own situation. Positive language is solution-focussed, is used to unleash the potential in the individual. Positive language is another way to remove interference. Positive, optimistic people live 8 to 9 years longer (Seligman)
