Goal

The aim is to create a 10 point statement that is relatively easy to comprehend that has contributions from all participants.

This is great for creating codes of conduct, groups agreements and identifying divergent needs and where compromise can be found

Materials

    Instructions

Explain that the process will be collaborative and result in everyone’s views being incorporated. In this example, we will use the idea of developing a code of conduct, but can also be for developing behaviors and also developing values and mission statements.

    1. Ask each person to individually come up with 10 statements for a code of ethical conduct. Writing them down in a list.

    2.  When they have finished they join together with another person - between them they must review , combine and discard their statements to produce a new list of 10 statements.

    3. This process repeats as pairs combine to fours, then eights then 16s, 32s etc then whole group.

    4. Final group writes the list on flipchart.

You may find that the final group (say of 200 people) is too big. So once group sizes are over 30 people, it is recommended that groups nominate 3 representatives to take forward the ideas.

    Background

Used in many events, facilitations and trainings where creation and participation are important,
