Peer Consultation Set-up
This exercise will help develop 'systems intelligence' with a view to being able to influence people in the right direction and in the right way.
Goal
This exercise will help develop 'systems intelligence' with a view to being able to influence people in the right direction and in the right way.
It will enhance the ability to 'diagnose' what's really happening in our roles in facing complexity and challenges, which in turn will impact how effective we are in influencing others.

ACTIVITY
With this knowledge, we are going to embark on an exercise that will help develop your 'systems intelligence' with a view to being able to influence people in the right direction and in the right way.
This will enhance our ability to 'diagnose' what's really happening in our roles in facing complexity and challenges, which in turn will impact how effective we are in influencing others.
Slide: Overall process:
Step 1: Peer Consultation
In groups of three, you will work with three people’s challenge using a structured process:
1. Case Presenter (3 mins) – adds context to their challenge (building on share from earlier in the session).
2. Questions (7 mins) – groups asks CP questions to help them and the CP understand the challenge more deeply.
3. Group discussion (7 mins) – CP remains silent while group discusses multiple hypotheses.
4. Case Presenter (3 mins) – describes their learnings and insights (should not try to defend).
Purpose: Gain additional insight in to how you might approach the case study scenario/real change. This isn’t a ‘normal’ conversation – it is a consultation and although the ‘rules’ may feel awkward, they are there for good reason – so please play with the process.
In helping each other, what kind of questions might you ask the person presenting their map to help them gain insight and clarity?
Examples: What is really going on here (beyond the obvious)? Where are the hot spots (risks, poor relationships, etc.)? What's your part of the mess (to promote ownership)?
Slide: Guidelines – Ten Questions to Consider (remember, you are supporting the CP to gain insights and next steps, not solve it for them):
1. What is your preferred outcome? How clear are you about that?
2. What have you done so far to make progress? What worked/didn’t work?
3. Describe your relationship with each of the key
people/areas.
4. Where are things going well? Why? Where are things not going well? Why?
5. Stepping back on looking at your map, what are the patterns or dynamics that may be impacting you making progress? What have you done so far?
6. What are you not seeing, that if could see if differently would change everything?
7. Where are you going to have to be courageous?
8. What role are you playing in this problem/challenge continuing? Where are you complicit?
9. What might you have to let go of to make progress? 10.
What are your next steps?
