Digital Landscape Showcase

Goal

This interactive activity is designed for learners to explore the 8 main parts of the digital landscape through creative storytelling and skits. Each group will receive a card with an explanation of their assigned digital landscape part (see Appendix A). Groups will then generate a short story or skit related to their part, and other groups will guess the focus of each presentation.

Note: This activity is best suited for groups that are comfortable with each other, and willing to engage in creative pursuits as a means of learning. This activity may not be suitable for all groups, particularly those that struggle with public speaking.

    Instructions

    1. Introduction

      1. Briefly introduce the concept of the digital landscape and its 8 main parts. Review Appendix A with the group.

      2. Emphasize the importance of understanding and navigating these aspects for a positive and safe online experience.

      3. Explain the activity format: each group will receive a card with an explanation of their assigned digital landscape part and will need to create a short story or skit related to it.

    2. Group Formation and Card Distribution

      1. Form small groups. Try to form groups that have a balance of extroverted and introverted learners. If virtual, use breakout rooms; if in person, assign physical spaces for each group.

      2. Distribute a card (see Appendix A) to each group, explaining their assigned digital landscape part.

      3. They should not share their card with any other groups.

    3. Storytelling/Skit Creation (30 minutes)

      1. Instruct each group to create a short story or skit that highlights key elements or challenges of their assigned digital landscape part.

        1. Learners will have the opportunity to perform their skit or read their story out loud when the time comes to present. Alternatively, groups can also share their scenario as an example.

      2. Encourage creativity, but emphasize that the presentation should provide enough clues for other groups to guess the focus, without them naming the focus.

      3. Provide learners with 1-2 examples to help them understand the activity:

        1. Example 1: If assigned Digital Etiquette, the skit could portray a situation where two characters are engaging in a conversation on a social media platform. One character posts a controversial opinion, and the other character responds with a differing viewpoint (and either does follow netiquette or doesn’t follow netiquette)

        2. Example 2: If assigned Digital Health and Wellness, the story could be about someone feeling overwhelmed and depressed by social media and online obligations, and they decide to take a digital detox weekend and spend the entire time out on the land without digital technology.

    4. Showcase:

      1. Each group presents their story or skit without revealing their digital landscape part.

      2. Other groups observe and try to guess which part of the digital landscape is being showcased.

    5. Guessing Round:

      1. After each presentation, ask learners to write down which part of the digital landscape they think each group was presenting on.

      2. Repeat for all groups.

    6. Discussion:

      1. Bring all participants together for a brief discussion on the showcased elements.

      2. Reveal the correct digital landscape part after each guessing round. Let learners share their “score” if they would like to.

      3. Review debrief questions listed below.

    Background

    Preparation

    • Provide handouts (paper or digital) of Appendix A for each learner.

    • Create a card (paper or digital) of each of the individual 8 elements assigned to the groups.

    • Ensure virtual breakout rooms are set up or allocate physical spaces for groups.

    Technology Considerations

    • Virtual: Ensure participants have access to virtual collaboration tools and have tested their cameras and microphones. Ensure breakout rooms are set up and planned in advance.

    • In-Person: No specific technology requirements.

    Additional Context

    • Highlight the real-world implications of each digital landscape part to make the activity more relatable for participants.

    • Encourage participants to consider both the positive and challenging aspects of their assigned digital landscape part.

    Tips for Localization

    • Encourage learners to create skits/stories that are reflective of their own experiences, their own communities and people they know and love.

    Debrief Questions

    • What surprised you the most about the different parts of the digital landscape?

    • Did you correctly guess the focus of other groups' presentations? What clues helped you?

    • How can the insights from this activity be applied to enhance your own online experiences?

    • What are some local or cultural considerations that should be incorporated when navigating the digital landscape in our community?
